The 411 on computer forensics from the RNC team
Computer forensics represents a defined process for the acquisition, analysis, preservation and documentation of digital evidence to ensure suitability for presentation in a court of law. Digital evidence includes devices such as computer hard drives, memory, thumb drives, mobile phones, and firewall logs, to name a few. The goal of computer forensics is to perform a structured investigation while maintaining a documented chain of evidence to find out exactly what happened on a computer device and the people responsible for it.
At RNC, we will use a series of forensic techniques to generate timelines, find deleted files and emails, identify altered documents and analyze last access dates to help our clients find the proof they need for any suspected digital crime. These offenses can range across the spectrum of criminal activity such as:
- Computer network intrusions
- Internal network intrusions
- Child pornography and exploitation
- Corporate fraud
- Theft or destruction of personal data
- Theft or destruction of intellectual property
- Murder / Homicide
- Kidnapping
- Embezzlement
RNC employs the latest computer forensics tools
Currently, our Dallas IT company utilizes leading industry-standard computer forensic instruments. EnCase Forensics® by Guidance Software is our main tool for evidence acquisition, analysis, preservation and documentation. Trusted by more than 60% of Fortune 500 companies and numerous government agencies, EnCase® Forensics lets examiners acquire data from a wide variety of devices. This tool allows RNC engineers to unearth potential evidence with disk-level forensic analysis that is repeatable and defensible, all while maintaining the integrity of the evidence.
Computer forensics, ESI and e-discovery work together
Typically, computer forensics allows RNC to assist clients with identifying and accessing ESI, electronically stored information, for litigation purposes. We can determine the cost, quality, security and defensibility of these materials. E-Discovery, an abbreviated term for Electronic Discovery, refers to the electronic aspect of identifying, collecting and producing ESI in response to a court order in a lawsuit or investigation. In E-Discovery, the scope of evidence requested is generally narrower than that of a full forensics examination. For example, the court order may only specify collecting email sent by a specific person or documents that contain specific keywords.
The modern digital world has created technological advances that help businesses grow and develop, but these enhancements have also resulted in the rise of digital crime. RNC has assembled an expert computer forensics team. Call our Dallas IT company office to schedule a consultation.
